NETTIE KAYE WILLIAMS

ARTIST STATEMENT

I began my art experience as a small child peering into the magical painting studio of my Aunt Eleanor. I loved the smell of linseed oil, aromatic cedar walls, and the way the light flooded into the window as she taught each of her students in the ways of creating beautiful works of art.

At age 18, I took my first art class at Point Loma University. It was as though scales had dropped from my eyes and I was suddenly able to see for the first time.

It was not until I reached the age of 30 that I began to paint in oils. I jumped into the deep end and started with portraits! Within a few years I had painted the formal por-traits of several Nobel Laureate scientists for California Institute of Technology.

It was a whirlwind.

The intensity of portrait painting gave way to the calmness of still life and liveliness of oversized florals (among a myriad of other subjects!)

Currently, if I had to sum up my work in one word, it would have to be Colorful. Often, I find myself grabbing the most intense colors and filling the canvas from corner to corner. As my art now begins to mature, I am seeking to lean confidently into the skills I have honed, allowing the freedom to apply paint more loosely with less fussing and greater energy. At the same time, I am in search of what I call, “The glow;” trying to push my understanding each day into grasping those elements that mysteriously create a sense of atmosphere, light and shadow.
