EDIE MARTIN

ARTIST STATEMENT
I remember knowing way back when I was in single digits age-wise, that I loved to make stuff. What I didn’t know then was that as I was making stuff, I was beginning my art career. I was using design principles I would learn later in art school, I was honing my skills, training my artist’s eye, and teaching my craftsman’s hands to manipulate materials. Those learning experiences continued through various mediums and stretches of time.
In early adulthood I decided to experiment with a stained glass class at a community college, and after a short acquaintanceship, I knew I was in love with the medium of glass. My stained glass obsession continued, expanded, and has shifted focus toward creating fused glass pieces. These are vessel types: bowls, plates, vases, and lampshades. Most recently my work has shifted to include creating jewelry, mostly using beautiful dichroic glass which, because of its texture, shine, and unique changing colors, makes amazing cabochons for jewelry.
Every endeavor is a semi controlled experiment, and I continue to be endlessly fascinated as I watch the glass transform in the kiln. – Edie Martin
