August is surprising us. Our surprises are two very creative guest artists who play with the unexpected: Jeweler Paula Sinclair and mixed media artist Amy Gilles. Paula works in enamel and copper, enamel fired into a gooey hot mass at 1500 degrees Fahrenheit or more in her GlassGlow Studios in Twin Falls. She never knows what to expect, but it is gorgeous. To complement the results, she often mounts the jewelry with elegantly mismatched hand-strung beads. Amy, a Professor of Fine Art at Northwest Nazarene University, will show her experimental paintings created around a free-form ink and water technique she explored during quarantine. The somewhat uncontrolled results resemble both the microscopic virus and the grand constellations of our universe. The paintings invite us to shift between the micro and the macro, chaos and control, much as the pandemic is both personal and global, much as art is both experimental and intentional.
We will also continue to host the simply elegant jewelry of Martha Heukensfeld through most of August.
View Paula’s, Amy’s and Martha’s work and the work of over twenty regional artists at Gallery 55 in the month of August. The gallery is open 11-5 daily.
You are invited to attend a reception for the artists on First Saturday, August 7, 4-7 pm. We will have a special surprise for you, music by Catfish de Grey. At the reception we will be serving wine with Covid-19 mitigation protocols in place.
