More about our featured artists:
Theresa Burkes, Painter and Printmaker
In her paintings, Theresa Burkes layers on the encaustic, a translucent medium of beeswax saturated with pigment. Before oil paints were invented, the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians painted with encaustics; the Greeks decorated their wooden ships with it and the Egyptians used it in their Mummy Portraits. Contemporary painters like Burkes use encaustic in all kinds of ways, freely combining it with other media, as in this color field painting with gold pan pastel. She has even been known to collage failed prints into her encaustic paintings.
Nancy Sathre-Vogel, Jeweler
Nancy Sathre-Vogel is another of our artists with a strong connection to history. The images on her wearable art come from antique books. She translates and etches their beautiful illustrations into jewelry like these brass cuffs to create her own totally unique art. She is one of the artists taking advantage of a British Library project to preserve historical art by scanning in books from the 1700’s and 1800’s and encouraging artists to appropriate the scanned illustrations.
